Beautiful Poem: Ghost in the House

Found on Big Blue Wave, this poem was written by a woman named Amanda and sent in a letter to Priests for Life. It is beautiful and haunting.

Ghost in the House~

Come, child. It’s evening. Come to me
And sit with me once more.
Let’s rock here while the others sleep.
Let’s see — your sister’s four;
The baby is three months today;
Your little brother’s two,
And I have not decided if I’ll tell them about you.

And you, you would be eight this year.
I do not know your name.
The color of your eyes, or hair,
Or where, or how, to blame.
The fear was all, the fear of change,
For I saw change as loss.
Against my dreams, my plans, my life
You seemed so small a cost,
Not knowing how your presence
Altered how I felt and thought,
Not knowing how you changed me
In the mix the hormones brought.
And you were not a child to me
But sickness, pain, and fear —
But oh, I know, I know you now,
Now that these three are here!
Your scent, your weight within my arms,
Your head upon my breast –
I did not know these things when I decided what was best.

And I am lost and so confused
And don’t know how to feel,
For you, who were an illness,
Every year become more real;
Your sister and your brothers,
They proclaim you as they grow.
They make it harder still to face
The coldest truth I know:
That knowing – feeling – only
What I knew and felt back then,
I cannot say I would not make
This saddest choice again.

Oh! My little lost unknown,
My first and neverborn,
Forgive the ignorance that sent you
To the dark, unmourned!

And no, it isn’t every day
I find your shadow here;
Most times I’m far too busy
For reflection or for tears,
But sometimes, when the children sleep
And I have time alone,
I sit down in the dark, and rock,
And bring my baby home.

People Deserve Better

by Fr. Matthew Wertin

Whatever anyone thinks about it politically, ethically, morally, or even religiously, one thing is certain – abortion does serious damage.  Women still die from abortion, abortion creates physical, emotional, spiritual, and behavioral problems for women, abortion is a form of racism against poor and ethnic women, abortion has lead to increased violence against pregnant women, women are pressured and coerced by family, friends, employers, institutions of learning, and sexual predators into having abortions, abortion is a band-aid that allows society to abandon women, and abortion negatively affects future relationships.  (To confirm these findings and to learn more, please go to www.silentnomoreawareness.org, or get a copy of their work, “What’s So Bad About Abortion?”)

The voices of women who have had abortions are resoundingly clear – “abortion hurts women.”  One woman, Sabrina, said, “My life just started spiraling down in destruction, and I attempted suicide three times.”  Another, Shelly, said, “Abortion did not end my pain; it began it.”  Now men are even coming forward saying, “We regret lost fatherhood through abortion.”  One man, Scott, said, “I didn’t defend the life of my own daughter.  Based on misinformation, selfishness, fear, shame, I let her die to an abortionist’s knife and I died the same day.”  The list of negative emotional, physical, psychological, and spiritual effects of abortion is hauntingly grave and long.

Just as every community, big and small, has women who are experiencing or will experience an unplanned pregnancy and need alternatives to abortion, so too every community has women and men, families, who are suffering from the effects of an abortion and need healing.  The fear, the pain, the confusion, as well as the need for guidance, help, and compassion are real and present in each of these situations and in each of these people.  It should be a priority of every community, therefore, in striving to meet the needs of others in their community, to do what they can, by offering resources, compassionate care, and social action, to bring about an end to abortion, give help to those experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, and extend healing, forgiveness, and mercy to those suffering from the wounds of abortion.  Abortion hurts everyone and helps no one, which is why we can and should join together in making it unnecessary, unthinkable, and unused as an option for anyone in any circumstance.  Women deserve better than abortion.  Men deserve better than abortion.  Every member of the human family deserves better than abortion.  Will we help those in need?

Cut You to the Heart

by Reita S.

“In my naiveté, I never knew I was committing murder”

“I would have been a good mother. Every time I see a baby or a pregnant girl it kills me inside.”

“I know if I would have stood with her she would not have had the abortion.”

“After the abortion I felt momentary relief and every day now I feel nothing but pain.”

“I keep wondering how many times I can tell my unborn child that I am sorry… how long will it take to forgive myself.”

“What heals me now is to to know that she/he is with God in heaven.”

“I never judge anyone who has had an abortion, because I know, I really know what they are feeling.”

“Please, don’t let your unborn child be just a memory.”

These quotations from the testimonies of different men and women all tell threads of the same story. The lie is pervasive. They didn’t know.

They didn’t know what they had. What they lost. What they would carry for the rest of their lives. They didn’t know where they would be healed.

That there are generations who have been sold this lie – that abortion is a quick fix, that abortion doesn’t hurt anyone – this should cut you to the heart. It’s certainly cutting theirs.

Please, if you know the truth, don’t be afraid to share it. Don’t let there be generations of young men and women walking wounded, bearing the scars of something they didn’t know.

Teach them in love.

Bind up the wounded. Heal the broken.

Be the change.
